Многие слова и выражения в американском варианте английского языка не совпадают с их британским вариантом, более того, они могут иметь и дополнительные значения.

Краткий словарь американсого сленга

Bored to death – ужасно скучно ("I have nothing to do. I’m bored to death." "I hate it when I’m bored to death." "Would you rather be super busy or bored to death?);

You’ve got to be kidding! – выражение удивления, неверия. ("Hey Jared. Mom told me to tell you that you shouldn’t stay out too late." -"You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m 30 years old." );

To be sick and tired – все ужасно надоело. ("I’m sick and tired of eating the same thing for lunch everyday." "I’m getting sick and tired of this song. They play it way too often at this club." "I’m sick and tired of listening to him nag all the time.);

Get on one's nerves – действовать на нервы. ("You’re beginning to get on my nerves." "Will you please stop doing that? It’s getting on my nerves." "His whining is getting on my nerves.");

Read one's mind – читать чьи-либо мысли. (“You read my mind. I was going to suggest that.” “You must have read my mind."; "Do you want to go play pool?" — "You read my mind. That’s exactly what I was thinking too.");

Feel blue – грустить, чувствовать себя подавленным. ( “What a gloomy day. It makes me feel blue." "Whenever I feel blue, I like to listen to upbeat music.");

Chicken – боязливый человек. (There’s nothing to be scared of. Don’t be a chicken.""Everyone thinks I’m a chicken because I didn’t go bungee jumping with them." "Stop being a chicken and just go.");

Give somebody a hard time – доставлять неприятности (Suzie gave him a hard time for not showing up to her recital." "Stop giving me a hard time. There was nothing I could do about it." "If you don’t finish your project, the manager is going to give you a hard time.");

Make up one's mind – принять решение (We don’t got all day, make up your mind." "Make up your mind, we don’t have much time." "I can’t make up my mind. Can you help me decide?" "If you don’t make up your mind, I’ll choose for you." "Both of them look really good. I can’t make up my mind.");

Stay in touch – не пропадай, пиши, звони ("Call me more often man. We got to stay in touch." "I hope you stay in touch with me. I’ll give you my contact information." "Let’s stay in touch. I’ll email you whenever I can.");

Keep an eye on — присматривать за кем-либо\\чем-либо ("Can you keep an eye on my daughter while I go get the car?" "Don’t worry about your luggage. I’ll keep an eye on it." "My mom will keep an eye on our equipment while we go get the truck.");

Give someone a hand – помогать (Can you give me a hand setting up the dining table?" "I’m going to need a hand changing the tire on the car." "Let me know if you need help. I’ll have time all day today to give you a hand.");

Take it easy – расслабься, не принимай все близко к сердцу (You’re pushing yourself too hard. Take it easy." "Take it easy man. You’re putting too much pressure on yourself.");

Twenty-four seven (24/7) – круглосуточно 7 дней в неделю (обычно речь идет о магазинах или о различных службах) (7-11 is a great store because they are open twenty-four seven." "If a business doesn’t provide twenty-four seven customer support, they will not succeed.");

Awesome – обалденно, круто. (“You look awesome!” “ The movie was awesome!”)

“I’ll be right back!”, “I’ll be right with you!” – «Я сейчас к Вам вернусь!»

Booze – алкогольные напитки\\выпивка (часто в меню ресторанов\\кафе встречается надпись BYOB – bring your own bottle\\booze что обозначает, посетители, могут принести свои алкогольные напитки).

Show sb the ropes – объяснить кому-либо суть дела. Например, вы приходите на работу и вам предстоит пройти тренинг: “John’s gonna show you the ropes”.

Freebie – бесплатный подарок к покупке (“ If you buy this perfume today you get mascara as a freebie”)

Got it? \\ I got it. – понял?\\ да я все понял;

I.D. – identification – документ, удостоверяющий личность;

Screw up – сделать ошибку, испортить что-либо;

What’s up? – Как дела? (What’s up? — Nothing much (not much) – ничего особенного)

Tape – скотч, которым клеят;

Staff – сотрудники;

Stuff – вещи (этим словом может обозначаться что угодно, например: “Will you give that yellow stuff to me?”);

Picture – фотография (Can you take a picture of me and my friends?);

Pants – штаны;

Quit – покинуть работу;

To be fired – быть уволенным;

To get promoted – получить повышение;

To apply for a job – подать заявление на работу.

Кроме того, в американском варианте английского используется масса фразовых глаголов (phrasal verbs). Вот некоторые из них:

Pick up/ drop off – подбросить (на авто)/высадить: “I’ll pick you up at six”, “You can drop me off here”

Put through – (при разговоре по телефону) соединить с кем-либо: “Can I talk to George?” – “All right, I’ll put you through”

Hold on – ждать: “Hold on for a minute, please…”

Hang out – встречаться вместе, собираться: “We may hang out together tonight”

Kick out – выставить, выгнать: “He was kicked out of the club”

Не стоит забывать также и о том, что произношение в американском варианте английского отличается от британского, что может вызвать ряд затруднений. Большинство студентов, даже если они интенсивно изучали английский в России, в США сталкиваются с так называемым языковых барьером. Тем не менее, общение с носителями языка и погружение в языковую среду способствуют тому, что многие студенты ближе к завершению программы начинают свободно общаться по-английски.
